About Pikes Peak Wilderness Area

Pikes Peak Wilderness Area

Located within the Pike National Forest in central Colorado, the Pikes Peak Wilderness Area encompasses over 50,000 acres of protected mountainous terrain surrounding Pikes Peak, one of Colorado’s most famous fourteeners standing at 14,115 feet. The area features a mix of alpine tundra, subalpine forests dominated by Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir, and montane ecosystems at lower elevations. Established in 1980, the wilderness area preserves the natural conditions of the landscape while providing opportunities for backcountry recreation. Hikers and climbers are drawn to the summit of Pikes Peak, often accessed via the Barr Trail, a strenuous and scenic route rising more than 7,000 feet in elevation over 13 miles. The Wilderness also includes other notable peaks and ridges, offering solitude and rugged conditions away from the more developed tourist areas. Wildlife includes mule deer, black bears, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, and various bird species such as the white-tailed ptarmigan. The proximity of the wilderness to Colorado Springs makes it a popular destination for day trips and multi-day backpacking. Visitors appreciate the panoramic views from the summit that extend to the Great Plains on one side and the Rocky Mountains on the other. Winter offers opportunities for snowshoeing and backcountry skiing in a challenging, snowy environment. The area emphasizes Leave No Trace principles to protect its fragile alpine environment and offers a true wilderness experience amid one of the most iconic landmarks in the American West.
